Use Quality Ingredients for Hummus

There are a couple of things you should always look for when buying chickpeas. First of all, make sure to select the dried chickpeas that are not coated in wax and don’t look overly polished (because they might be rancid).

You can find them in most supermarkets with Indian or Asian food sections. Plus, if you buy them at a bulk store they will be significantly cheaper than if you bought them at the supermarket.

Also, try to find organic tahini, because it’s packed with healthy fats and it will provide the best flavour for your hummus.

Preheat the Oven and Roast Your Chickpeas – First of all, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Then combine chickpeas, garlic cloves, and lemon peels on a baking pan. You will roast them for about 10 minutes (until you see that skins of the chickpeas start to open).

When done, remove them from the oven and let cool off completely before blending them.

Let Your Blender Do the Job! – Put all your chickpeas, garlic and lemon peels, cumin seeds, salt, and olive oil in a blender. Blend until everything is fully mixed. If you need to add some more olive oil for a smoother result, then go ahead and do so.

Add Tahini to Your Hummus Recipe – Now stir in tahini paste before blending one more time.

Pour Your Hummus into a Pita – Once you have blended all the ingredients, spoon it into a pita bread. Top with vegetables, roasted vegetables or even add in some cheese and bake them in the oven for another 15 minutes.

TIP: Using Lots of Garlic in Your Hummus Recipe

The recipe is made with one clove of garlic per cup of chickpeas. If you like your hummus to have a stronger garlic flavour you can use up to 4 cloves of garlic for every cup of peas.

You can also add roasted red or green bell peppers and a teaspoon of lemon juice if that’s your cup of tea.

How To Make Hummus

First of all, you need a food processor. If you don’t own one, you might want to buy one off Amazon.com

Next, we are going to roast the garlic in the oven: Place the garlic cloves on a baking sheet, drizzle them with olive oil, and sprinkle them with salt and pepper. Roast for about 20 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure not to burn them, or the garlic will turn bitter.

After that, you need to add the ingredients and follow this easy recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried chickpeas (garbanzo beans) soaked in water for at least 8 hours and drained. Don’t use canned ones – they don’t taste right! They should be fresh and soft. You can also use fresh ones! In that case prepare them according to the next steps.
  • 1-2 cloves of roasted garlic
  • 1/4 cup tahini (sesame paste)
  • juice from 1 lemon. 2 lemons should be enough, but it depends on the size of your vegetable peeler.
  • a pinch of salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. Add the chickpeas, lemon juice and garlic to the food processor or blender and process or blend until smooth.
  2. Add the tahini, salt and pepper. Process or blend again until well combined, but not to a point where the hummus gets too creamy.
  3. Serve immediately with pita bread, veggies or other side dishes.

Tips for Making the Best Hummus

– You can substitute the roasted garlic for about 8-10 fresh ones! If you would like more of a garlic taste, use more than 2 cloves of roasted garlic instead of 1-2 cloves of fresh ones.

– You can also skip the tahini and use less lemon if you prefer.

– If you want to add more flavour, increase the amount of lemon juice. You can also add a teaspoon of cumin, paprika or chilli powder.
